Rossi's wife, Federica Cappelletti, posted on Instagram a photo of her and Paolo with the caption "for every Sempre", which translates as " forever."
They did not reveal the cause of his death.
Rossi is widely considered one of the greatest Italian footballers of all time, and won the Golden Boot at the 1982 World Cup in Spain, as the best scorer, the Golden Ball Player of the tournament and, in the same year, the European Footballer of the year for his performance.
While a member of the Italian football club Juventus, Rossi won two Serie A titles, the European Cup and the Italian Cup in his four years with the club. Rossi also played for AC Milan.
After his football career, Rossi worked as a critic for Ray.
"This is terribly sad news: we have left Paolo Rossi,"Ray said. "Do not forget Pablito, who made us all fall in love in the summer of 1982 and who has been a valuable and competent work colleague at Rai over recent years."
Rossi is the second known World Cup winner to die in two weeks, following the death of Argentine national champion Diego Maradona in November.
