Microsoft Unveils New Copilot With Home, Code and Autopilot

September 26, 2026 — Microsoft has announced a major redesign of Copilot, bringing new AI-powered tools for everyday work, application development and task automation into a more unified experience.

The redesigned Microsoft Copilot is built around three main capabilities: Home, Code and Autopilot. Microsoft says the new experience is designed to help people ask questions, create content, build solutions and delegate longer-running tasks from one central platform.

What Is the New Microsoft Copilot?

Microsoft is repositioning Copilot as more than a traditional AI chatbot. The company says the redesigned experience connects AI assistance with tools that people already use for work.

The new Copilot brings together conversational AI, Microsoft 365 applications, application development and AI-powered automation. The goal is to give users a central place to complete different types of work.

Copilot Home Brings Work Together

Home becomes the main starting point for the redesigned Copilot. It brings Chat and Cowork together in one place.

Chat is designed for questions, research, drafts and everyday assistance, while Cowork is intended for tasks that users want Copilot to handle more extensively.

Microsoft is also integrating Word, Excel and PowerPoint directly into Copilot. This means users can create or edit documents, spreadsheets and presentations while continuing their conversation with Copilot.

What Is Copilot Code?

One of the most notable additions is Code, a feature designed to make application development more accessible through natural-language instructions.

Users can describe the application, dashboard, automation or workflow they want to create, and Copilot can help build the solution.

Microsoft says Code uses technology related to GitHub Copilot and runs in a controlled environment designed for secure development.

The feature could allow people who are not professional software developers to create smaller applications and customized tools for specific tasks.

Autopilot: AI That Can Continue Working

Another major part of the announcement is Autopilot, an AI agent designed to continue working on tasks without requiring the user to remain in front of the computer.

Microsoft describes Autopilot as a proactive digital teammate. Users can give it a name, role and objective, allowing it to work on longer-running tasks within Microsoft's work environment.

Because Autopilot operates in the cloud, Microsoft says it can continue working while the user is away from the computer.

Microsoft 365 Gets More Closely Connected to Copilot

The new Copilot experience also strengthens the connection between Microsoft's productivity applications and artificial intelligence.

Word, Excel and PowerPoint can be used directly through Copilot, while information and changes can remain synchronized with the corresponding Microsoft 365 applications.

This could make it easier for users to move between conversations and actual work files without repeatedly switching between different applications.

When Will the New Copilot Be Available?

Microsoft says Home and Code will begin rolling out through its Frontier program over the coming weeks.

Autopilot is expected to expand to private preview at the end of September 2026.

Availability can vary depending on the feature, Microsoft program and subscription or organizational environment.

Why the Update Matters

The announcement represents a broader shift in how Microsoft is positioning artificial intelligence inside its productivity ecosystem.

Instead of using AI only to answer questions or generate text, the new Copilot experience is designed to help users create files, build applications and delegate longer-running tasks.

For businesses, this could also make AI agents more closely connected to existing workflows, data and Microsoft 365 applications.

What Comes Next for Microsoft Copilot?

Microsoft says more Copilot features are planned. One upcoming feature called Today is designed to provide a personalized overview of emails, calendars, Teams conversations, meetings and tasks.

Microsoft is also preparing additional Copilot capabilities for Teams, including a feature that can use shared conversation and meeting context.

Final Thoughts

Microsoft's new Copilot represents a significant expansion of its AI strategy. With Home, Code and Autopilot, the company is combining conversational assistance, application creation and AI-powered task automation in one experience.

The rollout will happen gradually, so the exact features available to users will depend on Microsoft's release schedule, program participation and account type.
